Accounting & bookkeeping courses
Beginner friendlyThis QuickBooks course teaches you to keep UK books in QuickBooks Online the way a practice bookkeeper does. You'll set up a Shrewsbury garden machinery dealer from scratch and run its sales, suppliers, bank, stock, payroll and VAT returns. Then you'll take a sole-trader roofer through CIS and MTD for Income Tax and rescue the quarter he posted himself. By the end, a file someone else got wrong is a job you know how to fix.
Course overview
The course follows two clients, the way a practice works. With the machinery dealer you set up the file and opening balances, then handle sales, bills and expenses, bank feeds and reconciliation, stock and projects, VAT under Making Tax Digital, payroll with pensions and the month-end close. The roofer brings CIS, the construction reverse charge and quarterly updates for Income Tax, and then the capstone: putting his DIY quarter right.
By the end you can take on a new client in QuickBooks Online, keep every money account reconciled, prepare a VAT return with a working paper behind it, run UK pay runs and find and fix the errors in a file someone else kept. It suits bookkeepers, accounts staff and business owners who work in QuickBooks, or soon will.

Putting right the books a client kept themselves is real practice work. You'll have done it end to end, with the evidence to show an employer, and you'll know the route to Intuit's own ProAdvisor certification.

Check what your clients or employer run before you choose. If it's Xero, our Xero course is the better fit, and for Australian or New Zealand clients it's MYOB. And if invoices, bills and reconciliations are new to you, start with Bookkeeping & Payroll and build the basics first.
A course advisor will talk it through with you free, and will say so if a different course fits your goal better.
Good to know
UK bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online, from a new client file to returns ready for HMRC. With a garden machinery dealer you'll set up the file, then handle sales, bills, bank reconciliation, stock and projects, VAT under Making Tax Digital, payroll and month end. A sole-trader roofer then brings CIS, the reverse charge and MTD for Income Tax, and the capstone is rescuing a quarter he kept himself.
QuickBooks Online, the cloud version, and everything in the course happens there. QuickBooks Desktop isn't covered.
Not if you keep books for others. Intuit offers QuickBooks Online Accountant free to bookkeepers and accountants, and that's the route the course takes. If you run your own business instead, start on a free trial of the Plus plan and expect a monthly subscription if you need longer. Check Intuit's current terms when you sign up.
Whichever your clients or employer use. Both do the same job, and the bookkeeping you learn transfers between them. If nothing decides it for you, look at local job ads: they'll tell you which one employers near you want, and our Xero course is there if it's that one.
Yes, as a first course in the software, with no QuickBooks experience needed. Come knowing how VAT works, what a payslip shows and what a bank reconciliation is for. If those are new, start with Bookkeeping & Payroll and this course will make far more sense.
No. You keep the books for a fictional garden machinery dealer and a sole-trader roofer, so mistakes cost nothing and nothing you do reaches HMRC. If you run your own business, never practise in your live company: keep a separate practice file.
How to run VAT properly in QuickBooks: setting up the schemes and codes, checking for the classic mistakes, preparing the return under Making Tax Digital and tying every box to the ledger with a working paper. Advice on a specific VAT position stays with an accountant, and current rates always come from GOV.UK.
Yes. Complete the course and pass its final assessment and you get an OBA certificate of completion that an employer can verify online. It isn't Intuit's ProAdvisor certification, which Intuit runs separately for bookkeepers and accountants, though the course shows you where it fits.
